Visit to St. Joseph Community Based Organization (CBO)

Mweiga town, Nyeri County

Today, Tuesday, November 26, 2019 we traveled to Mweiga in Nyeri County, which is about 170km (about 106 miles). It took a little more than 3 hours to get to St. Joseph's having left our home about 6:30am to avoid Nairobi traffic.

St. Joseph CBO
St. Joseph's mission is to evangelize and implement various community integral development and relief programs targeting the most vulnerable communities. This CBO boasts various programs that serve the wider community of Mweiga.

Leah's brief message
We had the opportunity to visit and fellowship with young girls from the slums that neighbor St. Joseph. Leah gave a very brief presentation on the Ruby reminding the girls that they are loved and they are precious like jewels. Most of the girls did not have a strong command of English but they were able to follow as Leah and I tried to explain a ruby and diamond. They seemed to be familiar with diamonds.

Demonstration
We then asked all the men who were present to leave the room as we presented the girls with washable & reusable Sanitary Napkins that were in pouches. We demonstrated how to use and care for these cloth napkins. These was the first time they had ever seen or heard of cloth sanitary napkins. We answered all their questions concerning the napkins and clearly these girls were delighted with these gifts. One of the main reasons for their delight is that they will not have to miss school when they have their menstrual cycle because of lack of sanitary towels. Another reason is that they can wash and reuse these napkins for several years which is an economic benefit.

After a group photo with some of the girls, Brother Haron - our host, invited us to plant four trees to mark our visit to St. Joseph. I love trees so this was a delightful activity. The girls were then invited to have some tea and bread. This was another way to bless these girls who probably had not had anything to eat all day. Leah and I were able to financially bless St. Joseph because of the generous support we received from friends and family in the States.
Planting trees
We had to leave shortly after lunch because of our journey back to Nairobi and trying to avoid the evening rush hour. 😮

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
