Rest and Re-group
Wednesday, November 27, 2019
Today was a rest and re-grouping day. Well .... actually a rest day for Leah. I had to get up at 5:45am to leave the house at 6:30am so as to get to the dentist by 7:30am!!! Yes ... I had to go to the dentist because my tooth decided to get chipped. However, when I got to see the dentist ... after a long wait, I might add, he looked into my mouth and said, "you have tartar...we will just clean your teeth!" I tried to explain that I KNOW I have a chipped tooth. But I guess an English conversation between a Kenyan woman and an Egyptian dentist means a lot is lost in translation since English is not our first language - for both of us! ๐ถ Perhaps I should have drawn a diagram instead of trying to explain ... in English! In any case, I have a clean set of teeth with one chipped tooth that irritates me when my tongue brushes against it! ๐ I guess I have to make a dentist appointment when I get back to the States.

We have had interesting situations with Leah who stands out everywhere we go. One of the first things that concerned Leah when we arrived in Kenya was the large numbers of motorcycle "gangs" that would gather on the road. We were all puzzled as we tried to figure out what she was talking about. Then it became clear that what she was calling "motorcycle gangs" were actually taxis - including Uber motorcycle taxis - known as "nduthii" or boda boda (in the broader Swahili-speaking region). So while we were in Kibera slums (now known as Kibra), Leah had the opportunity to sit on a boda boda for a photo-shoot which amused the owner of the motorbike.๐

We make Leah sit in the front seat next to the driver so that we are not stopped by the police. After all, why would you "Mr. Policeman" want to stop a car carrying a tall beautiful American woman? So Ibra (short for Ibrahim), our amazing driver is wonderfully delighted to have Leah sit next to him and not have the annoying policemen stop him for no reason at all. Another incident happened this afternoon. I had to go make more copies of the Jewel Study outlines for our Saturday summit at the Cyber Cafe, a walking distance from the house. Now, I always go to this Cyber Cafe when I have to make photocopies of documents. The young man at the cafe charges me a reasonable price for the copies. Well, this afternoon I took Leah with me and as soon as he saw this beautiful foreign (Muzungu) girl, he hiked up the price of my copies. I burst out laughing and asked why the price was now different just because I was accompanied by a gorgeous tall "muzungu" foreigner. And with a confident smile he said in one of the local vernaculars "it's only a $1" to which I responded, "do my Kenyan shillings look like dollars because I am with Leah?" We all burst out laughing!

I have had so much fun with Leah. Everyone in my family LOVES her! We have laughed so much while on long trips, while sitting on the bed going through the Study, preparing for the summits or going through our face book or blog posts or photos of Leah speaking with animated expression.

Leah is also very creative. She made beautiful gift bags and ribbons from one sheet of wrapping paper! ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ณ
We are hoping to have an early night tonight because we have to be out of the house early (6:30am) tomorrow morning so that we can travel to Muranga County to visit our family ancestral home.
